Birney the cat

We are sad to announce that Birney the cat passed away peacefully on 15 April 2019 after a battle with cancer.

Birney joined our team in 2014, quickly stealing the hearts of our staff members, the wider community and visitors alike.

When Birney wasn't busy napping you could find him keeping an eye on our fleet of historic trams, greeting everyone who visited our workshop.

Birney's iconic status was cemented when he had a children's book published about him (by a visitor to the Depot) which is stocked in our Gift Shop. 

Birney left such an impression on our visitors that he regularly received postcards and presents in the mail.

It wasn't uncommon to receive phone calls asking "where do we get off the tram to meet Birney the cat".

Birney has been buried under the palm tree in front of the Bendigo Tramways Depot and Workshop.
