USA/Australian Free Trade Agreement:
Under the USA/Australian Free Trade Agreement (that came in to effect on 1 January 2005), tariff barriers have been dismantled!
Australian companies now have unlimited access to USA Government procurement tenders, and tariffs on Australian-manufactured rail equipment products have been eliminated!
This is great news for USA Heritage Trolley system operators. No longer is there a bar against USA Government funding of the purchase of these Australian products. The new Free Trade Agreement provides a waiver under the Buy American Act.

"We like the trucks used on W class Melbourne trams. We like them so much that two of our cars (186 and 369) run on W class trucks. The truck for car 636 was fabricated using components of a W class truck, and even car 122 has been retrofitted to use brake shoes from W class trucks. Since all of our cars with the exception of the PCC Winnie use brake shoes from W class trucks, we need a steady supply of new W class brake shoes. We have found an excellent new source: Bendigo Tramways in Australia. Not only do they have original Melbourne brake shoes, but Bendigo Tramways recently shipped two complete trucks to a new streetcar operation in Savannah, Georgia." (2)
