Remains of body dismantled and used as a template for construction of battery tram.

History:

19th April 1989 and the crushed body of steam trailer #2 was lifted from its Elmore resting place onto a semi-trailer for transport to the Gas Works tram depot.

The tram was kept in storage at the Gas Works until 1999, when it was transferred to the main tram depot where it was subject to an industrial-archaeological investigation in order to ascertain and record the design details of the body - both as a steam tram trailer and a battery tram.

Rather than restore the trailer to its former configuration, it has been decided to rebuild the body in its original form as Battery Tram #3.

Builder:

Bendigo Rolling Stock Company Limited (1890s) for the Bendigo Tramways Company Limited.

Technical Information:

Converted from a Battery Tram after the take-over of the Sandhurst and Eaglehawk Tramways Company Limited by the Bendigo Tramways Company Limited.

Body dismantled.

Electric Supply Company tram.  Retired in the mid 1930's this tram was sold to be used as a part of a private residence in Creek Street, Bendigo - directly opposite the Central Deborah Mine.  This tram was one of four which were rebuilt from other rolling stock surplus to requirements to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria.  The main distinguishing feature of this and the other three trams was the use of 3 windows in the saloon as opposed to 2 windows which were installed in the 12 new trams of the ESCV.  The tram was discovered during demolition of the residence at Creek Street during the early 1980s.  The ends and roof were rescued in the limited time available.  It was established from the design characteristics of the tram that it had been built around one of the ex-Ballarat horse trams which were transferred to Bendigo at the beginning of operations by the ESCV.  Features such as the horse-car platform roof had been incorporated into the clerestory of the tram, while the hooks for attaching the harness, etc to the horse tram were still in evidence on the underframe.
