The Central Deborah Gold Mine is still being worked today - underneath the surface of the city, as people go about their daily lives, miners are drilling for and still finding gold. Pop on your hard hat with its miners light and take a leisurely stroll on Level 2 of the mine to learn about the fascinating history of gold mining in Bendigo. Yes you will be able to see gold in the quartz reef on the mine's tunnels. Central Deborah is the real thing!
The Central Deborah Gold Mine was the last commercial mine to operate in Bendigo. In the period from 1939 to 1954 about one tonne of gold was unearthed from the mine, worth around $12,000,000 AUS in today's prices. The mine closed for a number of years until 1986 when it was re-opened for underground tours and miners once again ventured below with visitors to explore the fascinating tunnels and drives below.

Bendigo Art Gallery was founded in 1887 - Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee Year. In the late 1880’s, distinguished Bendigo architect W.C.Valhand supervised the conversion of the former Bendigo Volunteer Rifle’s orderly room in View Street, into a new home for the Gallery’s collection.
The revamped Gallery opened in 1890, and occupied the building now called Bolton Court. Drury Court was added in 1897, then Abbott Court just eight years later following a plan devised by another leading local architect: William Beebe. These rooms were designed in the grand European tradition (notably the Tate Gallery, London) with polished wood floors, ornate plaster arches and cornices, and diffused natural sky-lighting through rooftop lantern towers.
Bendigo Art Gallery has just completed an extensive building and renovation program which has seen the addition of a new contemporary wing, storage areas, the restoration of the period rooms, construction of a new entrance, a new gallery shop and improved wheelchair access.
